Portfolio Statement
Much of the inspiration for my portfolio comes from forms found in the natural world; that is objects that have not been changed or altered but are occurring in their natural state. I enjoy their many different and often contrasting characteristics such as how rock formation, used as a stimulus for my chess pieces, can be both rugged and smooth, or how coral can be graceful yet strong. I particularly enjoy sculpture and 3D
modelling and I think that natural form gives a good basis for a design, however because it can be subjective it also gives a freedom for expression and creativity. I am not constrained by a product having to be a certain way and I enjoy seeing how it evolves and takes shape. I studied the artist Henry Moore and am inspired by the shapes he creates through the use of curves and how he incorporates the environment into his designs by using holes, it adds depth and another dimension to his work. I have also studied Diane Lublinski and Jenni Ward who feature natural forms from the sea in their designs. I enjoy experimenting with how I can communicate these ideas into decorative and functional products, my preference being designing products with a purpose and I am excited to develop these skills in live projects using specialised facilities and technical workshops.

For one of my projects I chose to explore the theme of sustainability because I recognise this is an increasingly important issue for all designers. The garden trough makes growing your own produce from seed more accessible in small spaces. The process I followed from concept to product was very detailed and gave me a good insight into how important each stage of this is in informing the end product.
